I am struggling to find a direction for my coaching. I guess you could say I can’t find my coaching niche.

This is an important one. Are you too interested in too many things? That’s often my issue! Or are you unclear on what your specific purpose and mission is in your life? That’s often the root cause of the lack of a clear niche. Read More

I am finding someone I’m coaching energy′s exhausting. I know I should be able to remain centred but I have one client I just don’t enjoy coaching. Should I pass them onto someone else?

Short answer, probably yes. But it would be good if you could resolve this in a way that provides as much learning as possible for both you and your client. Read More

I have a client who struggles with confidence generally and in particular at work. Any suggestions?

Many people struggle with confidence. We all do from time to time. One great way to think about it is through the perspective of anxiety or fear.  Read More

No. Yes. Oh I am not sure. I suggest to my students they don’t coach close friends and family members.  Read More

I have a high earning client and am not charging them what I feel they ought to be paying me.

I am guessing that you fear losing them as client if you raise your fees. I am also guessing that you feel you ought to be charging them more because you are really valuable to them. And somewhere there is a nagging doubt about your worth as a coach. Maybe? Read More

I′m not sure if my coaching is actually working. My client seems to like coming to me but I am not sure what we are really doing.

Ask them. There is no short cut and guessing will potentially get you into trouble. It′s good in some ways that your client likes coming to you, but in other ways it can be an alarm bell. Read More

Do all coaches have clients who seem to want to change their lives but can′t do it? Clients who are stuck?

17 July 2018    Anthony Eldridge-Rogers
post

Well yes, to some degree or other. But let’s reframe stuckness. What we call getting stuck simply means that a person has come to a point or place in their lives where they have not yet figured out how to move on to the next step in a choice centred way. Sometimes, as you mention in your question, they just can′t. This should not be a judgment. They may lack knowledge, which they could get, or skills, which they could learn, or motivation, which they could develop with help or they are just not ready yet. If they′re not ready, you can coach them to become ready. Read More

I have a 40 something client, full of talent and capability who keeps failing to make the changes they want. What should I do? It has been going on for several months now and I am finding it tough to stay as their coach.

Not everyone can change at the same pace. How much time and the resources they need to change is different for everyone. Who knows what′s going on? Have you asked? Reflecting back what is happening and naming it is a first step. Make sure you don’t make it wrong. Your self management is key. They are not changing their lives for you!  Read More

I am thinking of doing an MSc in coaching. Will it make me a better coach? Do I really need to do it?

Well, it all depends. We all get into a profession for a reason and that reason varies. If you want to assist people, be a partner for them in improving and changing their lives, which is usually the case, then what you need to learn and become good at is very much down to personal preference. Except of course you need to find the right coach training for you in the first place. Read More

My client openly talks about suicide and then laughs it off, I feel a little out of my depth here what do I do?

Alarm bells have to go off when you hear your client talk about suicide. See your coach supervisor right away and start working on how to manage it. It has to be taken seriously as it would be unprofessional to not do so.  Read More
